10 magical exercises for developing reading technique

Article:

One of the most controversial issues for parents and teachers is whether it is necessary to teach schoolchildren to read quickly. Teachers have their own opinion on this matter - the main thing is that the child reads correctly, and not quickly. It is better to start teaching speed reading skills when the child already knows how to read and does not make mistakes. Otherwise, the student will begin to rush and become inattentive. It seems that he is engaged in reading, but he does not remember what he read.

Speed reading and its types

There are only three types of speed reading:

  • Analytical. There are principles and approaches here. It is the most difficult of all and the slowest, since you need to absorb all the information and understand it. Reading speed does not exceed 3000 characters per minute.
  • Introductory. Lighter look compared to the previous one. This reading technique is especially useful if you already have a structure of knowledge in your head and you just need to supplement and expand it. This technique is suitable for reading light literature and news. Reading speed is about 5000 characters.
  • Search engine. This is the fastest way to read. It makes it easy to find the desired piece of text. Also great for brushing up on existing knowledge. Reading speed can reach 14,000 characters per minute.

A person can master all three techniques and use them as needed.

Errors leading to decreased reading speed in children

When trying to teach your child to read quickly, you may encounter some difficulties. The fast reading technique provides for some rules; breaking them, the level of speed of information absorption, which a priori should be high, is lost.

  1. Speed reading for children has its own problems - articulation or pronunciation of words, as well as inner speech, are considered one of the main ones . When a child tries to say everything he has read out loud or mentally, this reduces the speed at which he absorbs information significantly. Therefore, if you want to teach your child to read quickly and fluently enough so that the speed reading technique is at its best, try to eliminate this factor. But in this case, we are talking about children who can already read quite fluently, without errors, that is, 8-10 years old.
  2. The eye must see not only the point where the gaze is directed, but also within a certain radius around it. As a rule, children have a small field of vision. But there are very few methods for expanding a child’s field of vision.
  3. The next error that slows down reading speed is the regression effect. This is the most common drawback. The method of increasing reading speed does not allow you to make reverse eye movements in order to read what has already been covered again. The habit of regressing is formed very tightly and is difficult to eradicate, so it is worth teaching the child not to make this mistake from the beginning. Pay attention to returns in the text: is it a lack of attention or misunderstanding of what was read?

However, there is an exception - if regression occurs as a result of rethinking or the emergence of new ideas, then this is called reception and is a justified action.

But, since the goal of the speed reading technique is to develop speed reading in children, it is better to comprehend a previously read text after the entire text has been read. Otherwise, unnecessary eye movements are considered a fault leading to slow reading. Freeing yourself from regression increases your reading speed by two or three times.

In addition to the above, the perception of information during speed reading is hampered by the problem of the child not understanding the meaning of the text. Psychologists interpret understanding as a connection between a subject and existing knowledge. When memorizing a text, you first need to understand it better.

How to master speed reading at home

Now there are a large number of specialized courses that teach this skill. The duration of the program can be 2-6 months. You can also find free courses on the Internet; there are specialized websites for this, where training programs are laid out in detail.

Is it possible to learn speed reading at home? The question is very complex and largely depends on the child and his abilities. It will be easier for a schoolchild to study in real conditions, since children at this age will develop a competitive trait. Many children find it easier to study under the supervision of a teacher who can advise, guide and help with this.

At what age to start

You can hear a widespread opinion that you can start teaching your child speed reading techniques at any age, since indirectly it develops attentiveness and improves memory. Experts have the opposite opinion on this matter and are convinced that this reading technique is suitable for children over 14 years of age.

During this period, teaching of various sciences begins at school. Physics, chemistry, algebra and other complex subjects appear. Schoolchildren are faced with the problem of mastering large amounts of knowledge in a short period of time. This is why these useful skills come in handy: reading a large amount of information and at the same time assimilating it well.

When engaging in speed reading with a child at an early age, there is a risk of developing the wrong cognitive strategy. First of all, you must read correctly and correctly.

If by the age of ten there are no problems with reading, you can begin to increase your speed. It is important to understand that speed reading does not teach you to read, but rather teaches you how to do it as efficiently as possible.

According to the Waldorf school

This school involves the all-round development of the student. The emphasis is on maximum knowledge of the exact sciences and humanities. Training in speed reading skills begins at the age of 5-7 years and is very intensive. The Waldorf school and its teaching methods are common in some European countries. There are very few such schools in Russia; they exist only in some cities of the Russian Federation.

According to Zaitsev's method

This technique is based on “Zaitsev’s cubes” and is designed for teaching reading to children over two years old. It can be used in kindergartens, schools, and at home. Shows good results when working with children with developmental disabilities - ODD, mental retardation, alalia and other speech and mental disorders. The Zaitsev method is used in working with children with visual and hearing impairments.

The training is based on the analytical-synthetic method - the use of stackable blocks in a playful way.

The letters are large in size and can be seen even from a distance of several tens of meters. This is necessary so that children do not have difficulty looking at them. The cubes themselves are painted in different colors - red, gold, green and others, while they are all different sizes and have fillers inside that make characteristic sounds when shaken. This is done with the aim of quickly and reliably memorizing sounds, letters, and syllables. This technique has a number of other positive effects:

  • develops writing skills;
  • corrects speech therapy speech defects;
  • speech becomes clear and intelligible;
  • vocabulary increases;
  • logic develops;
  • independence of learning develops.

There are statistics about when children start reading. Children aged 2-4 years begin to read after 6 months of classes. Children over 4 years old after 16 lessons. Children six years old can start reading after just 6 lessons.

Montessori method

The goal of this technique is to create an environment where the child will develop with minimal adult intervention, but under his control. The child chooses the activity and duration of training. In practice, this is a space that is maximally adapted for a child, taking into account his age, physiology and other individual characteristics.

He has at his disposal all the toys with which he can perform any manipulation. Classes are held in this space. It is divided into five zones that are responsible for your side of the personality:

  • practical life zone;
  • sensory development;
  • math zone;
  • natural sciences zone;
  • speech development.

Nowadays a huge number of such children's centers have appeared, but it is difficult to find a really good one. This is due to the shortage of specialists who know the Montessori method perfectly.

Andreev's Speed Reading Method

This technique was developed by Oleg Andreev. It allows:

  • increase reading speed by more than five times;
  • improve reading comprehension;
  • retain acquired knowledge in memory;
  • improve attention;
  • increase interest in the learning process.

Andreev’s programs consist of several classes:

  • sprint;
  • dominant;
  • satori;
  • fifth way;
  • sixth sense;
  • Fourth dimension.

The method consists of constant training. Gradually, the child stops reading words and perceives them as pictures. This greatly and quickly increases your vocabulary. Those who have gone through this technique read several times more books than their peers.

Lysenko's technique

This program was developed by Olga Lysenko, a teacher with more than 20 years of experience. Her method consists of four courses:

  • multiplication table;
  • ABC;
  • beautiful handwriting;
  • reading without syllables.

After completing all the courses, the child will quickly learn to write, read, and add numbers well.

Doman's technique

Consists of a set of physical and intellectual exercises and simulators. Doman is a proponent of the theory of the connection between physical development and mental development. By doing physical exercises, parents simultaneously stimulate his mental development. The methodology is based on classes aimed at all aspects of the child’s development.

Gorbov-Schulte tables

This is a test to assess the ability to shift attention. It is often used by psychologists to assess concentration. The table consists of red and black cells.

An example of a Gorbov-Schulte table for speed reading training.

Don't Make These Mistakes

When starting to teach their child speed reading, parents make some mistakes. Subsequently, speech therapists and child psychologists spend a lot of time correcting them. Experts have developed some of the most common mistakes that can be avoided.

Children face the following problems:

  • Articulation when reading “to oneself”. There is movement of the lips and tongue. This occurs in 80% of adults; they pronounce the information they are reading, while their eyes remain in one place for a long time. Articulation greatly reduces reading speed. The speed reading technique allows you to “scan the text.”
  • Many people rely on hearing when vision allows them to read material tens of times faster.
  • Insufficient field of view.
  • While reading, a person spontaneously makes movements with his head and neck. All this also reduces reading speed.

Almost all techniques are designed to eliminate these phenomena or significantly reduce their manifestations.

Tell the baby a letter, not a sound

The baby must understand a specific sound and imagine it as a letter. To “get acquainted” with a sound, the parent needs to say it many times. You can use rhymes, tongue twisters, songs in which this sound occurs. Accordingly, show the letter that means this sound.

Compose syllables from individual letters

Some methods do not include learning letters. They begin the process with words, as in the Doman method. Zaitsev’s method involves studying warehouses using special cubes. Before starting to teach reading, the child must know all the letters well and only then begin to add them into syllables and words.

They read texts for a long time

Parents read one text many times, so they lose interest in it. You need to use different books or different reading passages to prevent this from happening.

Training concentration

A well-trained concentration of attention makes it possible to find the main idea among the “water.”

We turn on both hemispheres

To do this, we take a text that is not difficult for a child and begin to read it several sentences or one paragraph at a time. You just need to do this with one eye: either the right or the left. This simple trick involves both hemispheres of the brain.

Let's celebrate the main thing

This technique is often used by scientists, and other famous personalities too. Using a simple pencil, or better yet, a marker, they highlight for themselves the most important thing in the text - 2-3 thoughts, by which they can judge the entire text on the page. Moreover, they don’t just highlight, but put their notes in the form of “!”, “+” or “-”, thereby agreeing or doubting.

Name the colors

A very interesting exercise that even adults cannot always cope with right away. Here are the words for you.

When moving to each next one, you must name the color in which the word is written, and not read what is written!

Looking for words

A simple exercise, but quite effective in developing attention. You need to find all the words in the text starting with a given letter. Another option is possible: find a specific word or even phrase on the page. It's better to do this for a while.

Puzzles

This is the easiest way for children to practice concentration. So-called trick riddles and trick questions are good for speed reading. Well, for example,

Exercises for first graders

Classic speed reading is designed for children over ten years old. They contain classes to eliminate pronunciation. There are a number of techniques that are designed for first graders that can increase reading speed, improve a child's memory and attentiveness.

Automated syllable reading

A child who cannot add syllables simply tries to guess the correct option, using the semantic context to help. This leads to a large number of errors and slows down reading development. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to use syllabic material for learning to read. It is impossible to guess the syllable this way.

The ability to read complex words gradually develops. This method is used for children suffering from dyslexia. In this case, teaching reading using classical methods is extremely difficult. For this, there are syllable tables that look like this:

The parent or teacher randomly points to a syllable and the child must read it. At first, tables of nine cells are used, gradually it becomes larger - 24, 36, 48. Thus, reading syllables becomes automatic.

Choral reading

This technique has long been included in the tools of the Russian classical school. Ushinsky K.D. recommended choral reading to enliven the class and relieve fatigue.

Choral reading is an active and effective form of teaching how to read with expression. Reading poetry affects the quality of speech, correct pronunciation appears, and hearing develops. In this form, poems or songs are better remembered. This affects memory in general and helps to pronounce words and individual sounds correctly.

Task "tug"

This task is used to improve your reading speed. The leader is an adult or student with a high reading speed. He reads the text, the others must keep up with him. This exercise is carried out in primary classes and kindergarten groups.

You can make sudden stops that other readers do not expect. The presenter may deliberately make mistakes that other readers should point out.

Jump-stop

With the command "jump", the child should start reading until he hears the command "stop". He stops reading and looks away from the book or closes it. The next time he jumps, he must start from where he left off.

Half

A word cut in half is shown on the monitor screen or paper cards, and the child must guess what kind of word is depicted in this picture.

What is speed reading?

Speed reading is a selection of specialized technologies whose goal is to increase reading speed. The most impressive result is 10,000 words per minute (about 6 pages of printed text). This skill will be useful for students who have to study huge volumes in search of an answer to a seminar question, but younger students do not yet need to break speed records and “swallow” books one by one. It is much more important for them to enjoy the printed word and thoughtfully read the texts of classical works offered to them. But teachers note that the ability to read quickly is also useful in grades 1-5.

It is very important that before starting classes, the child has a number of necessary skills - first of all, he can read meaningfully, thoughtfully, and understand what was discussed in the text. Without this, classes will lose meaning. In addition, the student must have sufficient vocabulary, the ability to concentrate, and focus on the text and its content. It is advisable that he does not move his lips while reading, pronouncing what he read - this significantly slows down the reading speed. If the child is now doing exactly this, he should avoid reciting through regular training.

Modern teachers have developed several methods to help teach a thoughtful child to read quickly, without losing the meaning of what he read.

Speed reading for children over 8 years old

The exercises used to teach speed reading techniques are designed for a certain age of the child. For children 8-10 years old there are their own exercises. They can be done at home with the help of parents. They are also used in specialized centers that teach this skill.

Insert letters

This exercise improves the child’s visual memory, teaches him to analyze what he read, develops the skill of relating the first and last letters of a word and creating a visual image of what he read in his head. This way he remembers better what he read.

On a piece of paper, print out a fragment of text in which vowels are omitted. The student must restore them. This task should take no more than 3-5 minutes (text of 3 sentences of medium length). Gradually the task becomes more complicated - entire words and phrases are skipped, and the allotted time is shortened.

Fixing the error

A teacher or an adult, when reading a book, intentionally makes mistakes, and the child must point them out and correct them. You can change endings, suffixes, and place accents incorrectly.

We are looking for a line

The student must find on the page of text all words beginning with the letter indicated by the adult. This trains attentiveness and the ability to concentrate.

Read at speed

The student himself measures his reading speed and keeps records of his achievements. In the second grade, the speed should be about 70 words and by the third grade it should increase to 100.

Hidden words

This activity is similar to reading anagrams. The child must form words from the letters drawn on the cards. At the initial stages, it is better to give him a list of hidden words. As you gain success, this is not necessary. Cards can be printed on plain paper or glued to a cardboard base.

Reading and counting

You need to read the text and at the same time count letters, words, punctuation marks, and the number of specific letters.

Tips and exercises for teaching speed reading for preschoolers

Tips for organizing and conducting classes for preschool children:

  • select texts of small size (segments consisting of 1-2 sentences are quite enough);
  • increase the number of sentences after speed reading of small volumes is well mastered;
  • conduct classes constantly, which is the foundation for mastering speed reading;
  • take short breaks between exercises (it is better to do fewer tasks and with high quality than to do everything and not get a positive result or dynamics);
  • You should not change the text or sequence of numbers in each lesson (the maximum use of the same task is 2-3);
  • It is recommended to combine reading with visualization. So, after reading a short text, the child is asked to look at the picture. Then you should take a short break. The method is easy, but quite effective for teaching a preschooler reading speed. This technique is recommended for use on children 5-6 years old;

  • at the beginning, the duration of classes should not exceed 5 minutes, then it gradually increases, taking into account the age of the children;
  • The frequency of classes for preschoolers should not exceed 2-3 times a week.

Classes can be divided into several stages:

StageExercises
Warm-upThe student needs to read a text up to 100 words long (activation of the brain, memory, thinking).
The parent or teacher asks the child questions about the content of what he read (vocabulary increases).

Particular attention should be paid to the movements of the articulatory apparatus.

Tasks for the development of peripheral visionSchulte tables are used. For preschool children, tables consisting of 9 numbers are selected.
Tasks for developing visual memory and improving attentionThe baby is offered words in which the letters are rearranged in syllables.
Tasks to combat articulation and regressive readingWhile reading, the word is covered with a bookmark.
The child needs to read the sentence to musical accompaniment (preferably without words). After reading, the child needs to answer the adult’s questions about the content of the text.

Another exercise that helps get rid of articulation is to cover your mouth, press your own finger to your lips and read the text. Then questions about the meaning are also asked

Final partThe child is given tasks to draw the material he has read.

Regression Suppression

Regression - returning your gaze to a read fragment of text. This happens uncontrollably in all people, which significantly reduces reading speed. To get rid of this, a number of special exercises have been developed.

Reading direction

Use a pencil or pen to follow the line, but only forward. This is how the child gets used to following the pointer and does not go back.

Close text

The text that has been read is covered with paper or a bookmark. The student places it at the top of the text and moves it down as he reads.

Speed check

You need to measure your reading speed every day. The resulting numbers are entered into a table. This is how progress and speed are tracked.

What prevents a child (and an adult) from reading quickly?

1. Narrow text perception space (field of view).

For most people, it is 4-5 cm. This is how much text a person sees when reading. To master the technique of speed reading, it is necessary to develop peripheral vision and expand this space to 7-8 cm.

2. Eye regression.

This is a very common reflex - a mechanical return movement of the eyes to the text that has already been read. After reading part of the text, a person automatically looks back and wastes time. It is impossible to prevent yourself from returning to a text you have already read through willpower; this will require training.

3. Articulation.

When a child is just learning to read, he reads out loud, pronounces words clearly and loudly. The child grows up, but the habit of internally pronouncing the text (and sometimes moving his lips while doing so) remains. In certain situations, this may be justified in the future - for example, when reading poems, when it is important to feel logical stress and pause. But for fast reading, articulation is not needed.

5. Undeveloped attention.

To understand new information, to instantly grasp the main and secondary ideas when reading fluently, you need to have increased attention and not be distracted by external factors.

Articulation suppression

Schoolchildren cannot read without pronouncing the words to themselves, moving their tongue. For speed reading techniques, this needs to be corrected and eliminated. To combat this you can use:

Musical accompaniment

The text is read to the music. After a few lessons, music with words is turned on. It is advisable to use classical compositions. You should not include fast rhythmic compositions.

"Bumblebee"

When reading, the child is disturbed by a monotonous sound, similar to the buzzing of an insect.

Rhythm

During classes, an adult rhythmically taps his finger on a table or other object. Gradually the rhythm speeds up.

Lock

The child should purse his lips tightly and read to himself as quickly as possible. For additional effect, you can cover your mouth with your palm.

Reception "Lips"

When speaking externally, reading speed slows down. Therefore, children should also be taught to read silently, without external signs of pronunciation. During reading, when the teacher gives the command “Lips!”, students should begin to read “to themselves.” At the same time, they need to press their finger against their closed lips to prevent them from moving. After the command “Aloud!” the finger should be removed and proceed to reading aloud.

When working to improve reading technique, it is important to take into account that the quantitative indicator depends on the type of temperament of the child and the level of development of his thought processes. Therefore, of course, it will not be possible to “bring up” all students to the required standards, but it will undoubtedly be possible to improve the results of everyone. In addition, in parallel with increasing reading speed, it is imperative to pay attention to the development of expressiveness and awareness of reading, to teach children to read correctly, without errors.

Exercises for concentration

Attention training is a mandatory element of speed reading. You should not conduct such activities during important activities. You should also not combine them with other exercises. The center of attention of this complex is the “spotlight”. It should be aimed at one thing, and not scatter. To achieve this, exercises were created.

Exercise "Line"

A drawing is applied to a sheet of paper with a slow, continuous movement of the hand. It could be anything, like a lily flower. The child concentrates on this activity. As soon as the child thinks about something or gets distracted, the line will be interrupted. After the drawing is ready, adults count how many times the child was distracted from the lesson.

Colorblind

When reading, you need to name the colors rather than read their names. Not everyone succeeds the first time, but with practice, the child will be able to name all the colors without making mistakes.

Red. Green. Blue. Yellow. Violet. Orange. Brown. Blue.

Red. Black. Green. Blue. Yellow. Brown. Black. Green. Blue.

Violet. Blue. Yellow. Black. Red. Orange. Brown.

Concentration on fingers

The student sits on a chair, holds his neck straight, head raised. The index fingers of both hands make rotational movements. The fingers should not touch each other, the amplitude is as slow as possible.

clock hand

Attention is focused on the tip of the minute hand and for 3 minutes the eyes count how many times this hand has moved.

Exercise from the course

If a child has not yet learned to read whole words, then speed reading courses will be of less use, since he simply needs to learn to perceive words as a whole, and not syllable by syllable.

However, if a child cannot read long words entirely, but already reads short ones perfectly, then you can begin to develop speed reading by training the child on the simplest texts. A little later he will master more complex texts.

Let's start with the simplest words

To read whole words, it is better to start with the smallest words, for example: House, Hedgehog, Cat, Dog, Ditch. The child should learn to read them at speed, each word separately, preferably on a separate screen or sheet of paper. You can also cover unread words with another sheet of paper.

If three-letter words are read easily and quickly, then you need to go straight to slightly more complex words: Dad, Mom, Rama, Ivan, Masha, Misha, Table, Chair and so on..

After the child begins to quickly read 4-letter words, we move on to 5-letter words. Try to choose easier and more understandable words first, then slightly more complex ones. Along with words of 5 letters, you can sometimes give words of 4 or 3 letters to raise the child’s interest, since they are easier.

Let's move on to phrases

After the child has begun to read words of 6-7 letters, you can give him phrases: a cat on the road, a dog on the floor, a house in the forest, and so on. So that the child tries to read each phrase separately as quickly as possible.

After the child has learned to read phrases, you can safely start reading children's books. The brighter and more colorful they are, the better. If you instill in your child an interest in books now, then later they will be more interested in reading school and educational literature. And there is a greater chance that the child himself will read books that interest him.

The Development of Ancipation

When reading a book, with peripheral vision the child should see the outline of the next word and guess what it is. Exercises have been invented for this.

  • Ruler. Close the text for 10-15 characters, while the child should read at his usual speed.
  • We read upside down. The text is first read in normal mode, then upside down, that is, vice versa. This exercise affects memory and attention. You can also rotate the book 90 degrees.
  • Halves. Use a piece of paper to cover the line of text that the student is reading. You only need to cover the top or bottom of the letters; the child must guess which letters are written.

To expand the field of vision and memory

Exercises for children to develop reading speed also involve working on peripheral vision, since if the radius of peripheral vision is very small, then this becomes a serious obstacle to fast reading. Therefore, every day you need to perform special exercises that will help solve the problem. A similar exercise has already been described earlier - Schulte tables. But there are other options.

  • Working with shapes. You should draw a sun with several rays on a piece of paper. At the end of each ray, place a geometric figure familiar to the child. The student’s task is to look at the sun and name the figures in order.
  • Improving photo memory. The exercise is performed on a computer or using pre-prepared cards. The parent prints a few words (or lays out cards on the table where they are written down). The child’s task is to read them and remember them; he looks at the words for 10-15 seconds. Next, the adult asks a question: was there a certain word in this row? The child must remember and give the correct answer.

Reading speed has a direct connection with memory, so it is very important to include various exercises in your training aimed at improving visual memory.

Reading with an adult

This is a way to teach a child to read quickly by imposing on him the high reading speed that an adult has. The student is forced to adapt to this pace, and over time he can maintain it. It can take three types:

  1. Parallel reading. The parent reads the book, constantly changing his speed, increasing and decreasing it. The student must place his finger in the right place and constantly monitor it, avoiding lags and advances.
  2. Relay race. The text is read in turn - by a schoolchild and an adult. The reader must be changed suddenly. If possible, the parent should speed up their pace.
  3. Tail. The adult begins to read, the child joins in a few words later. You need to read in a low voice. The task is not for both of them to go astray.

Building a lesson

In order for a child to learn to read quickly and understand what he reads, several types of exercises should be included in daily training.

You can use a sample lesson plan.

  1. Warm-up part. The child reads aloud a short fragment of text (the optimal length is about one hundred words), then answers the parent’s questions about its content. Also, as a warm-up, you can pronounce tongue twisters and tongue twisters; it is recommended to do this in two ways: in a whisper and loudly.
  2. Working with the Schulte table or performing any other exercise from the block to develop lateral vision.
  3. Working with anagrams or distorted text to improve memory and develop attentiveness.
  4. Reading upside down text.

This structure is approximate and can be modified by the parent depending on which tasks the child copes with worse.

Speed reading classes will help your child gain skills useful for his future life. Parents have to complete difficult tasks: to understand when the student is ready to start regular training, that is, to read meaningfully, and also to help him gradually increase his reading speed, develop memory and thinking with the help of special exercises.

What slows down reading

Trying to teach your child to read quickly can face a number of difficulties. The main ones are:

  • Articulation. Reciting what you read to yourself. This phenomenon applies to most adults as well. They do the same. This effect is a habit that is difficult to break.
  • The eye does not have a sufficient viewing angle. A person sees only the area where his eye falls and a small area around.
  • Regression. This is a popular flaw that affects reading speed.

All speed reading techniques reduce the influence of these factors and lead to an increase in reading speed.

Limited field of view

A wide viewing angle reduces the search for the desired fragment in the text. This angle is called the field of view, which can be expanded with special exercises - Schulte tables. Works with them are capable of developing parallel attention - symbols that are in the field of view are understood by the reader at the same time, but are recounted sequentially.

The main thing is to look at the center of the table and see the numbers located along its edges. With regular practice, reading speed increases due to the development of peripheral vision, that is, a person sees more text. A small angle allows you to see only one fragment of a page of text.

Methods for developing fast reading

In reality, there are a lot of methods for developing this skill, but I will tell you and give you advice about those that I liked the most and are easy to master.

Warm-up

Before you start reading, it will be useful to do a breathing warm-up so that the whole body calms down, tunes in, and concentrates on the reading process.

1) Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth;

2) Inhale, hold your breath and exhale;

3) Inhale and exhale in portions.

Exercises for clarity of pronunciation (articulation gymnastics)

Then the child needs to read several pure sayings.

  • M:

Ra-ra-ra - the game begins,

Ry-ry-ry - we have balls in our hands,

Ru-ru-ru - I hit the ball with my hand.

  • Quiet and moderate:

Arka, artsa, arta, arda, arla, archa, arsa, arzha.

  • Loud and fast:

Burn - steam - fry, door - beast - worm.

  • Exhaling:

Quick Reading Exercises

  • Reading for a while

There is nothing complicated in this technique; the principle is simple and familiar to us.

You must first explain the task to the child, then give him a text of a feasible size and complexity, set the timer (or use a stopwatch) for one minute and start reading.

When a minute has passed, record where the child stopped and count the number of words read.

Next, repeat reading the same text for a while.

The reading speed will gradually become faster and faster - point this out, let the child notice his successes and strive for new ones!

  • Highlighting the main thing in the text

It is very important to teach a child not just to read quickly, but also to understand what the text says, what the author wanted to convey to them, and what conclusions can be drawn based on it.

Tell your child to read some text as quickly as he can.

After reading, ask him a couple of questions about the text.

Repeat the exercise until the child can answer your questions.

  • "Tow"

As already mentioned, following the text with your finger simplifies and speeds up the reading process.

Just now help your child!

Let him read while you move your finger along the text, gradually picking up speed.

A kind of competitive element, an external stimulus, will force the student to strive to speed up the process.

  • Restoring deformed sentences

Ask your child to correct sentences in which words are mixed.

Let it be 5-8 simple sentences, increase the load gradually.

Examples:

1) “The snow was falling calmly on the houses” - “The snow was falling calmly on the houses”;

2) “They gave our Masha semolina porridge” - “They gave our Masha semolina porridge”;

3) “We got to the train station at the station” - “We got to the station by train”;

4) “Fishermen catch fish while fishing” - “Fishermen catch fish while fishing” and so on.

The exercise trains speech flexibility, attentiveness, memory and visual field well.

  • Role reading

In order to involve the child in the lesson, add variety and arouse interest, invite him to read this or that text, parodying the intonations of various cartoon characters or animals.

  • Connecting parts of a word

Prepare 10-15 words for this exercise.

Divide each of them into 2 parts and write both parts on separate cards.

Design them brightly and attractively to interest your baby.

Let him find and connect two parts of one word, and you shuffle the cards each time.

Give your child words of two syllables first and complicate the task step by step.

This training develops the student’s visual memory, thinking and vocabulary.

Exercises to develop speed reading skills

Speed reading consists of a series of activities and exercises aimed at various areas, from expanding the angle of vision to improving memory, the ability to concentrate on one subject, in this case, reading a book.

Green dot method

Observation of a point occurs autogenously. This exercise requires a special mindset. It develops attention and willpower. The exercise goes like this:

  • A small green dot is drawn on a piece of paper in the center.
  • You need to sit comfortably on a chair, keeping your back straight.
  • You need to look strictly at the point and focus only on it.
  • The distance from the eyes to the sheet of paper should not be more than 30 cm.

During class, you can’t think about extraneous things, but focus completely only on the point. This exercise is carried out for 3 months, 10 minutes every day.

Training gibberish

The exercise consists of gibberish reading, that is, vice versa - from right to left. This is how imaginative thinking and attention develop. In the initial phases, palindromes are good (pressed boar on eggplant), after which you can switch to regular text.

Reading upside down

The book is read upside down. This exercise improves your reading speed. First, you need to read one or several paragraphs in this form, and gradually the entire page of text is read.

After reading the page backwards, you should turn it back to normal and read it again.

Tick tock method

When reading, the eye falls on the beginning of the line and its end, the rest of the contents of the line are thought out by the reader himself, and then compared with the source code.

Reading diagonally

The reader should look diagonally across the text. Moving your eyes in different directions is strictly prohibited. The eye will see only some words, but gradually the volume of what is seen will expand. This method helps to isolate the main phrases and semantic meaning from the text and skip unnecessary information. It should be read from the top left corner and goes to the bottom right.

Over time, you can understand the meaning of what is written simply by looking at the text with your eyes. We need to celebrate progress and success in our studies. For clarity, you can hang a calendar or table above the student’s desk that will contain Fr. This increases motivation, giving an incentive for further activities.

Speed reading for children - how to teach a child to read quickly

Concentrate your gaze on the center. Mark identical blocks with your peripheral vision. The goal is not to find identical blocks as quickly as possible, but to concentrate your gaze on the center of the screen with your peripheral vision and find the necessary information.

Learn to read quickly

However, some exercises from the speed reading course can be applied to children and schoolchildren. For example, you can perform exercises for concentration, relaxation, and entering a state of perception of important information.

A few words about the dangers of speed reading for children:

Why it is harmful for children to learn speed reading, I will give an example of American blacks. Instead of saying Yes, they shortened it to Ya - apparently this happened because they, without studying at school, do not feel the deep roots of the word.

Speed reading is largely guessing and skipping through unnecessary pieces of text. A person with little life experience will not correctly perceive the text’s reference points and will not correctly understand the author’s thoughts.

Notes for those teaching children speed reading:

What is dynamic reading (speed reading)
- speed reading is a set of manipulations with text that can significantly increase the reading speed of a speed reader without a large loss of understanding of the article read. It should, by the way, be borne in mind that officially there is no clear division between “slow” and “fast” methods of perceiving information for the reason that most readers use reading exercises that are suitable for them.

Basic techniques and principles of speed reading

  • Developing the habit of instantly highlighting the main meaning of a text
    , filtering out junk information and reading effective and useful information.
  • Elimination of stops, regression, recurrent eye movements
    . With the traditional method of reading, repeated readings of the same material are very common, which significantly slows down the reading speed and reduces the rate of assimilation of information.
  • Preview reading
    . Taking photographs without focusing on text with little significance.
  • Suppressing the pronunciation of the text
    - developing a new reading strategy: I perceive the text and immediately understand the meaning of what I read. The average reader already has such reading skills. For example, logos and abbreviations are immediately decoded. Many familiar phrases are perceived as pictures. It should be borne in mind that unfamiliar words should be read by decoding them into sound images, that is, by pronouncing the text.
  • Expanding the field of view
    . There are special trainings (for example, the Shulte table) aimed at expanding the angle of vision to two or three words, several paragraphs. Thanks to a wide angle of view, the reader can cover more information in one fixation of gaze than a reader who does not have such a skill.

Think of books as windows to the world

Ushinsky recommended looking at a work of art “as a window through which children should see this or that side of life,” and emphasized that “it is not enough for children to understand the work, but it is necessary for them to feel it.”

K.D. played a huge role in reading classes. Ushinsky’s observations of natural life and demanded the use of clarity

when reading, he considered clarity to be the main principle of teaching the Russian language.
The system created by Ushinsky was called “ Explanatory Reading
”.

What are the consequences of insufficient reading skills?

If in elementary school children read little, thought little, they developed the structure of an inactive brain.” He recommended a different approach to reading popular science articles and reading works of fiction, developed principles for conducting conversations depending on the type of work, and gave specific instructions about the specifics work on works of folklore and fables.

The methodology for analyzing a work of art has been improved: more creative, developmental exercises, the ability to express one’s own opinion about what is read, working on the work as a whole, and not on individual small parts, students have greater independence in revealing the ideas and images of the work, a variety of types of tasks when working with text.

During expressive reading, assumptions were confirmed that the development of reading skills will be effective, research on the development of fluency skills, if you select the text and understand what you read, i.e. create a “success situation”, conduct exercises for expressive reading, starting with the simplest ones and gradually complicate them.

How is text analyzed after reading in speed reading mode?

The challenge with any existing speed reading technique is that we cover not individual words, but the entire phrase.

The adjective “rosy-cheeked” can be removed; it characterizes the child’s appearance; “Karapuz” is the subject, we leave it. We skip “sweet”, it doesn’t have much meaning; “sniffled” – predicate; “snoozed” where? - in the cradle (we remove the beautiful one).

We preserve the meaning of the sentence, but during reading we remove unnecessary parts of the sentence. It will be difficult to immediately identify the right words in the text, but over time you will learn.
